Objectives
- Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI), a sub-scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) is being implemented in seven eastern states namely Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and eastern Uttar Pradesh from 2010-2011 to address the constraints limiting the productivity of rice based cropping systems. The main objectives are;
- To increase production & productivity of rice and wheat by adopting latest crop production technologies;
- To promote cultivation in rice fallow area to increase cropping intensity and income of the farmers;
- To create water harvesting structures and efficient utilization of water potential; and
- To promote post harvest technology and marketing support.
Salient Features of BGREI
- The BGREI program was announced in the Union Budget, 2010-11 with an allocation of Rs. 400 crores. During 2010-11, this program was implemented in all the seven BGREI States on the basis of the plans devised by these States.
- The programme gained momentum in 2011-12 with the focus on rice and wheat only and strategic interventions relating to crop production, water harvesting and recycling, asset building and site specific activities needed for improving the agronomy adopting cluster approach aimed at enhancing the productivity per unit area and the income of the farmers.
- The goal of the BGREI program is to harness the water potential for enhancing rice production in Eastern India, which was hitherto underutilized. Various initiatives under the scheme are – •
- Block or cluster development of improved production technology
- Asset building activities for farm improvement
- Site specific activities for farm renovation
- Seed production and distribution
- Marketing support and post-harvest management
