Festivals celebrated in Himachal Pradesh have a direct relationship with the changing seasons in the state. Every new season is celebrated with a festival. It is also related to the harvest of some festivals. The Naths of the festivals are counted according to the native Vikrami month of Samvat. The first day of every month is called Sankranti and many people observe fast on this day. Similarly, the day of the full moon, the day when the moon appears in the full form of the sky, is also considered auspicious. Parents consider it their duty to call married girls at their homes during each festival. The festivals celebrated in the state are as follows:
1. Baisakhi –
Known by the names Bissu or Bisa (Shimla), Beas (Kinnaur), Bosa (Bilaspur-Kangra), Lissu (Pangi) , this festival of Baisakhi is celebrated on the first Baisakh i.e. 13th April in almost all the state. This festival is related to the arrival of the Rabi crop. On this day, baths are performed at Markand in Bilaspur, Ribalsar and Parashar Jhalo in Mandi, Giriganga, Renuka Lake etc. in areas of Tattapani, Shimla and Sirmaur, Banganga in Kangra and other pilgrimage centers.
2. Nahole
On the solstice (13-14 May) of Jyestha month, a festival called Nahoule is celebrated in the lower part areas, in which sweet dishes are prepared and fed.
3. Wrestling Bouts –
Chaitra in the month, some areas of the part of HP on your will be done or some collective local deity whom Lkdata pleased to say, Chinj (a type of wrestling) do Mayojn of which Wrestlers are called from far and wide.
4. Chetra Sankranti –
Vikram Samvat starts from the first date of Chaitra month. Chakra Sankranti is also celebrated as a festival so that the new year is auspicious and joyous time. The following part of Hesi or Mnglmuki and the middle and upper Daki or gravy in the nations in Chaitra month to clarinet and Dolki playing the door to door dancing and Tue anthem.
5. Chatrali, Chatra or Dholru (Chatrali, Chatra or Dholru) –
In Kullu , this festival is called Chatrali and in Chamba and Bharmour area it is called Dholru . In Chatrali, women gather at night to dance and sing. Dance is also organized in Dholru.
6. Cherwal
It is a festival of the regions of the middle and the upper part, which starts from the Sankranti ( August ) of Bhadrapada and celebrates the whole month. A circular soil layer is removed from the ground and placed on a wooden plank. A second small fold of this type is taken out and placed on the first fold and flowers and green grass are decorated all around. This is called irritation . In the evening, all the people of the house worship by offering incense and etc. Special dishes are cooked. Children sing songs of Chira. It is worshiped on the last day of Bhadas and on the first Ashwin ( September ) it is thrown on the dung heap and later taken to the fields. Many people also call it Prithvi Puja.
7. Jagra or Jagrata
Though Jagrata can be celebrated on any day of the year in the memory of any deity, but Jagrata has special significance in the month of Bhadrapada ( August ). Jagrata can be performed by calling the deity in the house of any deity. Jagrat families and people from neighborhood or village wake up all night to sing the Kirtan of the respective deity.
8. Warlaj –
Barlaj is celebrated on the second or third day of Diwali, and on the next day the festival of Bhaiyya-dooj, in which dishes are also cooked like Cherwal festival. Artisans do not do any work on a rainy day, nor do zamindars plow etc. It is also called Vishwakarma Day.
9. Lohri or Magha
This festival is celebrated on the solstice of the first Magh. Sometimes it is called Lohri or Makar Sankranti , in the middle part it is called Maghi or Saja . Bathing at pilgrimage places is considered auspicious on this day. Khichdi of rice and lentils is made as a dish, which is eaten with ghee or curd. Angithas are lit in the village where people sing bhajan kirtan at night. Children, boys and girls of the village sing Lohri songs in different groups from house to house for eight days.
10. Vijayadashami or Dussehra Nilavdashmi or Dushahra) –
This festival is celebrated at the end of the Navratras of Ashwin. This festival is celebrated in India under the name Vijay Dashami or Dussehra. It is also celebrated in Himachal Pradesh. Ramlila is organized for nine days before the festival and effigies of Ravana, Meghnath Kumbhakarna are burnt on Dashami. Dussehra of Kullu holds a special place in Himachal Pradesh across the country . This fair runs for seven days and people from all over the country come to Kullu to see it.

11. Holi
This festival is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima . People keep a fast which is opened to burn Holi. On this day children, old, young women, men play Holi of color and gulal and apply it on each other.
12. Shivratri
The Shivaratri festival celebrated on the fourteenth of Krishna Paksha in Phalgun month holds great significance in Himachal Pradesh, as Shiva is believed to have a direct connection with the mountains of the Himalayas. A fast is observed on this day and Shiva’s pindi is worshiped.
13. Bharath
In the lower parts of Himachal, Bharaths are organized in the month of Bhadas and also in other months. Bharath is also sung like Jagrat. The difference is that Bharath has a skilled group of people singing this type. Only the members of that group play their different instruments which include Dauru and Thali etc. and sing together. The basis of Bharatha singing is the saga of a heroic divine man.
14. Phulech –
It is a famous festival of Kinnaur celebrated in the end of Bhadon or in the beginning of Ashwin month and is mainly a festival of flowers. This festival is celebrated on different dates. It is also called Ukhink .
15. Sair
This festival is celebrated on the first Ashwin (September) . The dishes are also cooked in it. On the last night of Bhado month, the barber decorates Galgal’s citrus in a plate in the form of an idol, flowers on it and lights a lamp and takes it from house to house. People bow the head in front of him and offer money. Many fairs are also organized on that day. This festival is celebrated to mark the end of the rainy season and the joy of the arrival of the Ashadhi crop.
16. Raksha Bandhan, Rakhdi (Bilaspur), Rakshapunya (Shimla), Salun (Mandi-Sirmaur) (Rakshabandhan) –
This festival is celebrated on the full moon that falls in the month of Sawan . On this day, the sisters inoculate their brothers. Taxes tie rakhi.
17. Khohri
Khohdi is celebrated on the second day of Lohri , in which fairs are held at many places. It is considered good to pierce the ears and nose of virgin girls on this day. It is considered good to eat mustard greens and eat it on this day. Artisans do not do any work on this day.
18. Nag Panchmi
It is celebrated on Shukla Panchami of Shravan month. It is a festival to worship snakes and please them. On the day of Nag Panchami, “Bami” (a house built on the ground by the termites), milk, kugu and flowers are added to the serpents as it is believed to be the abode of Nagas in Bami.
19. Shri Krishna Janamashtami
This festival is celebrated on the Ashtami of Bhadas on the birthday of Shri Krishna. The child idol of Shri Krishna is worshiped by swinging it in panchhuda. The fast and the Jagrata are kept. Kirtan of Shri Krishna is done all night.
20. Nawala
Gaddi , celebrated as Shiva worship, is a famous festival of the people of the clan . It is a family festival, which is necessary to celebrate each member of the family once in a lifetime.
21. Haritalika –
This festival is celebrated on the Tritiya of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadon. This is a women’s festival. In which women worship mud by making clay idols of Shivji-Parvati and birds by decorating and coloring them. This fast is done to protect husbands.
22. Nirjla Ekadashi
This festival is celebrated on Shukla Ekadashi of Jyestha month. In which food or water is not taken even from the sunrise of Ekadashi to the spring of Dadashi, which is a strict austerity in the summer days. This fast was told by Rishi Vyas to Bhima as he could not fast on every Ekadashi like his brothers and mother.
23. Bhunda Shand and Bhoj
Bhunda of Nirmand (Kullu) is very famous in Bhunda. It is a festival of narcissism like Narbheda Yajna. The government has now stopped the inclusion of the man in this festival, and the goat is put in place of the man but in the Bhunda festival till the beginning of the 20th century, the man was sold.
Shaanda is related to prosperity . This festival is celebrated every twelve years by Khand . The festival is celebrated on the peaks of the Hadi in which the deity of the village is brought to the palanquin and bowed and the goat is sacrificed. All the visitors and relatives of the villagers are welcomed and they are fed dham for four-five days .
The banquet is also a celebration of the peace, which is believed by the Koli people only.
