1. Assess the impact of global warming on coral life system with examples. (150 words)

Ans. Global warming is the irreversible century scale rise of temperature from the pre-industrial level. This rise of temperature is the greatest global threat to coral reef ecosystems. Scientific evidence indicates that the Earth’s atmosphere and ocean are warming, and that these changes are primarily due to greenhouse gases derived from human activities.

Impact of Global warming on coral life system is as follows:

(i) As temperatures rise, mass coral bleaching events and infectious disease outbreaks are becoming more frequent.

(ii) Ocean acidification i.e. increased carbon dioxide absorbed into the ocean from the atmosphere reduces calcification rates in reef-building and reef-associated organisms by altering seawater chemistry through decrease in pH.

(iii) Global warming leads to destruction of coral reef ecosystems through changes in the frequency and intensity of tropical storms.

(iv) Global warming leads to sea level rise which increases the sedimentation for reefs located near land based sources of sediment. This sedimentation run off can lead to choking of corals. Further, sea level rise increases optimum depth of continental shelf required for growth and sustenance of the corals, this hampers their growth.

(v) Global warming leads to altered ocean circulation patterns which leads to changes in connectivity and temperature regimes that contribute to lack of food for corals and hampers dispersal of coral larvae.

Examples Great barrier reef is under threat due to global warming according to the Australian Government’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). The other major environmental pressures that are harmful for coral life system includes decreased water quality from land-based runoff, impacts from coastal development and some persistent impacts from fishing activities. The reef is also threatened by orms, coral bleaching and ocean acidification. Other coral reefs such as Amazon reef, Miami terrace reef are also under threat due to the environmental pressure and rising global temperature.

The alarming situation which has arose due to adverse impact of global warming on coral reef necessitates immediate actions. The need of the hour is to shrink the carbon footprint by reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and to facilitate action plan so as to improve overall coral reef condition.
