Hamirpur District GK Complete Notes in English:-

Geographical location – Hamirpur is located in the western part of Himachal Pradesh. Hamirpur district is situated between 31° 25′ to 31° 58′ North Latitude and 76° 18′ to 76° 44′ East Deshantar. The borders of Mandi to the northeast and east of Hamirpur district, Una to the west and southwest, Kangra to the north and Bilaspur district to the south. The height of Hamirpur city is 786 meters above sea level.

Dhar-Hamirpur district has 3 main dhars. Zakh Dhar, Chhabutra Dhar and Solhasinghi Dhar. Jakhdhar enters Hamirpur district from Nadaun. The city of Hamirpur is located to the east of Jakdhar. Solan Singi, Dhar is the longest Dhar in Hamirpur, it is known as Chintpurni and Jaswan Dhar in Una.

Rivers – Beas river forms the border with Kangra of Hamirpur in the north. In the Man Khad west part, Kunah Khad in the northwest part, Baker Khad flows in the east part and joins the Beas river. Sukar Khad and Mundkhar Khad meet in the Seer Khad. The Seer Khad finally flows south and joins the Sutlej River. Sukar Khad borders Bilaspur, Baker and Seer Khad border Mandi district to Hamirpur.

History Of Hamirpur District –

  • Hamirpur:-In 1700 AD, after Alamchand’s death, Hamirchand became the ruler of Kangra. At that time the Kangra Fort was under the Mughals. Hamirchand ruled the Kangra princely state from 1700 AD to 1747 AD. The place on which Hamirchand built a fort in 1743 AD, was later called Hamirpur. Hamirpur Fort was made Tehsil Office in 1884 AD. In this way, Hamirpur was made Tehsil Headquarters in 1868 in place of Nadaun.
  • Sujanpur Tira – In 1748 AD, King Abhaychand of Kangra built forts and palaces on the hills of Sujanpur which became famous as Tira. The city of Sujanpur was founded by Ghamand Chand. Ghamand Chand built the Chamunda temple in Sujanpur in 1761 AD. King Sansar Chand of Kangra made Sujanpur Tira his capital. King Sansar Chand built the Gauri Shankar Temple at Sujanpur in 1793 AD. The Nardeshwar Temple of Sujanpur was built by Sansar Chand in 1823 AD. King Sansar Chand started the festival of Braj like Holi at Sujanpur Tira. Sujanpur Tira was visited by William Moorecraft and George Trivek in 1820 AD. The only Sainik school of Himachal Pradesh is located at Sujanpur Tira. Sujanpur is the largest sports ground in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Nadaun – Nadaun city is situated on the banks of river Beas. At this place, the Mughals were defeated by Gurugovind Singh and Raja Bhimchand of Bilaspur in 1687 AD. This war is famous as the Nadaun war. King Sansar Chand of Kangra made Amtar his summer capital near Nadaun. Sansar Chand said about Nadaun “Aaye Nadaun Jayega Kaun”. King Sansar Chand kept King Ishwari Sen of Mandi imprisoned for 12 years in Nadaun prison which was later rescued by the Gurkhas. Moorecraft traveled to Nadaun in 1820 AD. Nadaun was made the tehsil headquarters in 1846 AD. Yashpal Sahitya Pratishthan was founded in Nadaun in 2000 AD.
  • Mahalmoriyo – In 1806 AD at Mahalmoriyo of Hamirpur, the Gorkhas defeated Maharaja Sansar Chand, after which Sansar Chand had to take refuge in Kangra Fort. Hamirpur was under the control of the Sikhs from 1806 to 1846. In 1846, Hamirpur came under the British.
  • Bhumpal – The architect Yashpal was born in Bhumpal. Yashpal jumped into freedom struggle in 1918 AD. Victoria Cross – Lance Nayak Lala Ram of Hamirpur was awarded the Victoria Cross for his indomitable courage in the First World War. He is the first Himachali to receive the Victoria Cross.
  • Construction of the District – Hamirpur district was a part of East Punjab in 1966 AD. Hamirpur was merged with Himachal Pradesh in 1966 as a Tehsil of Kangra District. Hamirpur was separated from Kangra on 1 September 1972 and made a district. Before the creation of Hamirpur district (1972 AD), there was a sub-division of Kangra district. Hamirpur district was formed from Hamirpur and Badsar 2 tehsils. Sujanpur Tira, Nadaun and Bhoranj tehsils were formed in the year 1980 AD.

There is a temple of Baba Balaknath in Diyotsiddh. The Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Board (presently HPSSC) is located in the Pakka Bharo of Hamirpur. There is a Navodaya School in Dungri of Bhoranj. There is an All India Radio Center at Pakpadora in Hamirpur. Sheep breeding center is located in Taal. Jaladi has a milk processing center. NIT is located in Hamirpur. Gasota fair, Piplu fair, Sair fair are held in Hamirpur.

Demographic Statistics – The population of Hamirpur district increased from 1,60,375 in 1901 AD to 1,91,311 in 1951 AD. The population of Hamirpur district increased from 2,65,011 in 1971 AD to 4,54,768 in 2011 AD. The population of Hamirpur district recorded a decline between 1911 to 1921 (view 95%) while the highest increase was recorded between 1961 and 1971 (20.26%). The sex ratio of Hamirpur district was 900 in 1911 AD, 936 in 1951 AD, 1111 in 1971 AD and 1095 in 2011. The sex ratio of Hamirpur district was highest in 1981 AD (1149) and lowest in 1971 AD (900). The density of Hamirpur district has increased from 237 in 1971 AD to 407 in 2011. In 2001, Hamirpur district had a population of 23.88% and 0.04% in the population. There are 229 gram panchayats, 1635 populated villages, 6 development blocks and 5 assembly constituencies in Hamirpur district. In 2011, 6.91% (31,413) population of Hamirpur district lives in cities and 93.09% (4,22,880) population lives in villages.

Location of Hamirpur district – Hamirpur is the smallest district by area of Himachal Pradesh which contributes 2.01% area in Himachal Pradesh with an area of 1,118 km. Hamirpur district ranks ninth in the population. Hamirpur ranks 10th in the decadal (2001-2011) population growth rate (10.19%). Hamirpur district has the highest literacy (88.15%). Hamirpur district has the highest population density (407). Hamirpur district has the least population of (0.04%) after Una. The density of roads per km (1.35 km./km) is highest in Hamirpur district while Hamirpur stood at the seventh position of 1803 km. as of 2012 in total road length. Hamirpur district ranks first in the sex ratio (1095). Hamirpur ranks 10th in the infant sex ratio (887). Hamirpur district has the lowest forest area while Hamirpur is 11th in the forested area. Hamirpur district was third in Malta production, third in Galgal production, fifth in mango production, fourth in litchi production, third in jackfruit production and sixth in pomegranate production in 2011-12. Hamirpur district was the first in the production of papaya in 2011-12.
