Himachal is known for its narrow gauge railways. One is the Kalka-Shimla railway , which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site , and the other is the Pathankot-Jogindernagar line. The total length of both these tracks is 259 km.   


Kalka-Shimla Railways –

The total length of the Kalka-Shimla rail route is  96 km.  is. There is a narrow railway line on this railway route, the width of which is 76.2 cm. is. This railroad has 869 bridges. The rail route between Kalka to Shimla has 20 railway stations, among which Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Salogata, Summer Hill etc. are prominent. The railway was built in  1898 during the British Raj  . Traffic on this railroad started for the first time on 1 January 1906. This railroad was built by the British to connect their summer capital Shimla to Kalka. A total of 103 tunnels have been built on this railway route, the longest of which is Barog tunnel. Its length is 1143.61 m. is.


Baba Bhalku Ram  has contributed a lot in the construction of the Kalka Shimla Railroad  . The same rural illiterate had done the survey and alignment of the Kalka-Shimla rail route around 1900 AD, otherwise without its support, the engineering feat would have been limited to papers only.


Kalka Shimla Railway Track has Total 18 Sections –

Kalka  [0 km],  mint  [5.69 km],  Gummn  [10.41 km],  rank  [16.23 km],  Sonwara  [26.55 km],  Dharampur  [32.94 km],  Kumarhtty  [38.79 km],  Barog  [42.14 km]  Sloan  [ 46.10 km],  Solan Brewery  [50.9 km],  Salogra  [52.71 km],  Kandaghat  [58.24 km],  Noh  [64.92 km],  Kethaleghat  [72.23 km],  Shoghi  [77.81 km],  Taradevi  [84.64 km],  Jutog [89.41 km],  Summer Hill  [92.93 km], Shimla  [ 95.59  km].


Nagal-Churud Railway Line-

The only major railway line in the state is  Nangal-Dam Churud  . It is  26 km Long . It is an extension of the Delhi-Nangal rail line.


Nangal-Una Railways

The Nangal-Una rail route is the only broad gauge rail route in Himachal Pradesh that  connects Una to New Delhi.  The length of this railway line is 16 km. is. Nangal to Talwara rail route in the state. Maan is running in full swing. With the formation of this, there will be an increase in the rail route in Himachal.


Pathankot-Jogindernagar railway route (Parthankot-Jogindernagar Railway) –

 This rail route is the primary means of reaching the beautiful valleys of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh  . This railroad   was started in 1926 and traffic started on this railroad. The total length of this railroad is 113 km. is.  Major railway stations like Harpur, Palampur, Baijnath, Jogindernagar etc. have been built on this railway route  . There are 2 tunnels in this rail route.
