Educational Qualification
Candidates must fulfill the prescribed essential educational qualification. The advertisement specifies either of the following routes:
- At least 2nd Class M.Sc. in Forensic Science with specialization/dissertation work/course work/project work in the field of Chemical Sciences.
- OR at least 2nd Class M.Sc. in Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Pharmacy, M.S. (Pharm.) or M.Pharm. degree from a recognized University.
Required Experience
Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience acquired after obtaining the prescribed degree. The experience should be in Research, Training and Analytical Work within the specified subjects.
The experience certificate must be formally issued and signed by either the Research Supervisor or the Head of the Organization/Department.
The advertisement also specifies that research work conducted specifically for completion of a Ph.D. degree shall be counted towards the required three years of experience.
Desirable Qualification
- Ph.D. Degree in one of the specified subjects.
- Knowledge of the customs, manners and dialects of Himachal Pradesh.

HPPSC Scientific Officer Selection Process

Paper-I: Objective Screening Test
Paper-I is a 100-mark Computer Based Test (CBT) or Offline Screening Test of 1 hour duration consisting of objective-type multiple-choice questions.

Paper-II: Subject Aptitude Test (SAT)
Paper-II is a Descriptive Subject Aptitude Test (SAT) of 3 hours duration carrying 120 marks.

Negative Marking
Negative marking applies to objective-type screening tests. For each wrong answer, one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. The advertisement also states that leaving an objective question blank without selecting the designated option can attract the same penalty.
Personality Test
The Personality Test carries 30 marks and is conducted at the Commission’s office at Shimla.
- General Category: Minimum 40% = 12 marks.
- Reserved Categories: Minimum 30% = 9 marks.
The final ranking/selection is determined on the basis of marks obtained in the Subject Aptitude Test and Personality Test, subject to the selection conditions prescribed by the Commission.
