HPRCA Assistant Staff Nurse Syllabus

The Himachal Pradesh Rajya Chayan Aayog (HPRCA) has officially released the syllabus for the Assistant Staff Nurse Examination. Candidates preparing for the HPRCA Staff Nurse recruitment must carefully go through the detailed subject-wise syllabus provided below. The syllabus covers Nursing subjects up to Graduation/Diploma level along with General Awareness.


1. Subjects up to Graduation / Diploma Level

i. Applied Anatomy

Introduction to anatomical terms and organization of the human body; Respiratory system; Digestive system; Circulatory and Lymphatic system; Endocrine system; Sensory organs; Musculoskeletal system (Skeletal and Muscular systems); Renal system; Reproductive system; Nervous system.

ii. Applied Physiology

General physiology and basic concepts; Respiratory system; Digestive system; Circulatory and lymphatic system; Blood; Endocrine system; Sensory organs; Musculoskeletal system; Renal system; Reproductive system; Nervous system.

iii. Applied Sociology

Introduction, definition, nature and scope of sociology; Significance of sociology in nursing; Culture – nature, characteristics and evolution; Diversity and uniformity of culture; Difference between culture and civilization; Culture and socialization; Transcultural society; Modernization and its impact on health and disease.

iv. Applied Psychology

Biological basis of behavior; Developmental psychology; Personality; Psychological assessment and tests – introduction.

v. Nursing Foundation – I (Including First Aid Module)

Introduction to health and illness; Health care delivery systems; History of nursing and nursing as a profession; Communication and nurse-patient relationship; Documentation and reporting; Vital signs; Equipment and linen; Infection control in clinical settings; Comfort, rest, sleep and pain; Promoting safety in healthcare environment; Hospital admission and discharge; Mobility and immobility; Patient education; First aid.

vi. Applied Biochemistry

Carbohydrates; Lipids; Proteins; Acid-base maintenance; pH definition and normal values; Regulation of blood pH (buffer, respiratory and renal); ABG normal values; Acid-base disorders – types, definition and causes.

vii. Applied Nutrition and Dietetics

Introduction to nutrition; Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals; Balanced diet; Nutritional deficiency disorders; Therapeutic diets; Cookery rules and preservation of nutrients; Nutrition assessment and education; National nutritional programs and role of nurse; Food safety.

viii. Nursing Foundation – II (Including Health Assessment Module)

Health assessment; Nursing process; Nutritional needs; Hygiene; Elimination needs; Diagnostic testing; Oxygenation needs; Fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance; Administration of medications; Sensory needs; Care of terminally ill; Death and dying; Psychosocial needs; Sexuality; Stress and adaptation; Cultural diversity; Spirituality; Nursing theories.

ix. Health / Nursing Informatics and Technology

Use of information in healthcare management; Components of nursing information system (NIS); Evaluation, analysis and presentation of healthcare data for decision making.

x. Applied Microbiology and Infection Control & Safety

Introduction and relevance to nursing; Principles of microbiology; Microorganisms; Pathogenic organisms; Immunity; Hospital acquired infections (HAI); Isolation precautions; Personal protective equipment (PPE); Hand hygiene; Disinfection and sterilization; Specimen collection; Biomedical waste management; Antibiotic stewardship; Patient safety indicators; International patient safety goals; Employee safety indicators.

xi. Pharmacology – I

Introduction to pharmacology; Antiseptics and disinfectants; Drugs acting on gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiovascular systems; Drugs for blood disorders; Endocrine drugs; Integumentary system drugs; Drugs for communicable diseases.

xii. Pathology – I

Introduction to pathology; Special pathology; Hematological tests for diagnosis of blood disorders.

xiii. Adult Health Nursing with Integrated Pathology

Intra-operative care; Nursing management of patients with respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, blood, endocrine, integumentary and musculoskeletal disorders; Communicable diseases.

xiv. Pharmacology – II

Drugs for ear, nose, throat and eye disorders; Urinary system drugs; Nervous system drugs; Hormonal drugs; Contraception; Drugs during pregnancy, labor and postnatal period; Alternative systems of medicine; Principles of prescribing.

xv. Pathology – II and Genetics

Special and clinical pathology; Genetics; Prenatal and genetic influences; Genetic testing; Genetic disorders in neonates, children, adolescents and adults.

xvi. Adult Health Nursing – II with Integrated Pathophysiology

Nursing management of ENT, eye, kidney, urinary, reproductive, neurological, burns, oncology, emergency, disaster, geriatric and immunological disorders.

xvii. Professionalism, Professional Values & Ethics (Including Bioethics)

Professional conduct; Regulatory bodies; Roles and responsibilities; Ethics and bioethics; Ethical principles; Ethical issues; End-of-life issues; Psychiatric care ethics; Ethics committee; Code of ethics; Patient rights.

xviii. Child Health Care

Healthy child; Neonatal care; Integrated management of childhood illnesses; Childhood diseases and emergencies.

xix. Mental Health Nursing – I

Mental health concepts; Assessment; Therapeutic communication; Management of schizophrenia, mood disorders, neurotic and stress-related disorders.

xx. Community Health Nursing – I

Community health concepts; Health planning; Environmental health and sanitation; Nutrition; Health education; Epidemiology; Communicable and non-communicable diseases; National health programs; School health services.

xxi. Educational Technology / Nursing Education

Theoretical foundations; Teaching methods; Clinical teaching; Educational media; Assessment and evaluation; Guidance and counseling; Evidence-based teaching.

xxii. Child Health Nursing – II

Cardiovascular system; Orthopedic disorders; Behavioral and social problems in children.

xxiii. Mental Health Nursing – II

Substance use disorders; Personality disorders; Behavioral and emotional disorders; Organic brain disorders; Psychiatric emergencies; Legal issues; Community mental health nursing.

xxiv. Nursing Management and Leadership

Nursing services in India; Management principles; Staffing; Leadership; Organizational behavior; Financial management; Nursing informatics; Nursing education management; Legal and ethical issues.

xxv. Midwifery / Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing

Midwifery concepts; Reproductive system anatomy; Pregnancy, labor and postpartum care; Neonatal care; Family welfare services.

xxvi. Community Health Nursing – II

Emergency management; Reproductive and child health; Demography; Surveillance; HMIS; Disaster management; Biomedical waste management; Health agencies.

xxvii. Nursing Research and Statistics

Research process; Research designs; Sampling; Data collection and analysis; Introduction to statistics; Utilization of research.
