Geographical location – Kullu is a district located in the central part of Himachal Pradesh. To the north and north-east of Kullu lies Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur in the east, Shimla in the south, Mandi in the west and south-west, and Kangra district in the north-west.
चश्में – – Manikarna, Vasishta Kheerganga, Kasol and Kalath.
Rivers – Sutlej and Beas are the major rivers of Kullu. Sutlej river forms the border of Kullu district with Shimla district. Parvati, Tirthan, Senj, Harla, Sarwari, Solang, Manalsu, Sujon, Fojal are the major tributaries of Beas. The Parvati River is the largest tributary of Beas which joins Beas near Bhuntar (Shamshi). The Tirthan river joins Beas near Larji. The Sainj River also joins the Beas River near Larji. The Harla river joins Beas near Bhuntar. The Sarwari River joins the Beas River near Kullu.

1. Establishment of Kullu State – Kullu is described in the mythological texts as ‘Kullut Desh’. The description of Kullut is found in the Rajatarangini of Ramayana, Vishnupurana, Mahabharata, Markandeya Purana, Vrhatsamhita and Kalhana. In Vedic literature, Kullut country has been called the land of Gandharvas. Kullu Valley has also been called ‘Kulantpeeth’ as it was considered the end of the habitable world.
The princely state of Kullu was established by Vihangmanipal after coming from Haridwar (Mayapuri). With the blessings of Bhagwati Hidimba Devi, Vihangamanipal established Jagatsukh, the first capital of the princely state (Nasta). Vichhangamipal’s son Pachapala defeated the king of ‘Ghazan’ and ‘Bewala’.
2. Mahabharata period -The total goddess Hidimba of the princely state of Kullu married Bhima. Ghatotkacha was the son of Bhima and Hidimba who participated in the Mahabharata war. Bhima killed Hidimba (Tandi), who was the brother of Goddess Rakshasi Hidimba.
3. Singh Badani Dynasty – Kullu remained under the Suket princely state for most of the 50 years after Kailashpal. In the year 1500 AD, Siddha Singh established the Singh Badani dynasty. He made Jagatsukh his capital.

1. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry– Foodgrains Bij Promotion Farm is located in Sainj of Kullu. Potato development is central in Hamta and Kuna (Ani). The Vegetable Research Center is located in Katran. Captain R. C. Lee In 1870 AD, planted a British variety of gardens in Bandrol Kullu. Angora Farm was established in 1964 AD at Mohal in Kullu. Fish farms are located at Patlu Kahul, Nagini and Moheli of Kullu. Kullu has tea gardens in Bajaura, Naggar and Raison. Padha Bansilal did the work of planting apple orchards locally. AT Manali Bannon planted British variety of apples in 1884 AD. Duff cuttrain and Dungri, Colonel Ranik bajaura, Minikin planted apple orchards in Naggar.
2. Industry and Minerals -Rural Industrial Training Institute, Girls Industrial Training Institute (ITI) is located in Kullu. Shamshiki started in ITI1961-62 AD. Limestone is found in Kai Knight, Larji and Harla in Parvati valley.
3. Hydroelectric Projects – Parvati Project (2051 MW), Malana Project (86 MW), Larji Project (126 MW). The Parvati project is the largest hydroelectric project in Himachal Pradesh.
4. Parvati Hydroelectric Project – Located at the confluence of the rivers Parvati, Sainj and Garhsa. In this project 3 power houses are located at Naqthap, Sainj and Larji. 5 states signed agreement on Parvati project on 20 October 1992. These five states are – Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
👉👉 Temples and Fairs in Kullu District: –
1. Kullu Dussehra – Raghunath Jee Rath Yatra is carried out on the day of Dussehra at Dhalpur Maidan in Kullu. Hidimba takes Mata to the King Raghunath Temple (Sultanpur) of Kullu. Kullu Dussehra is an international festival that lasts for 7 days.
Bhadoli fair is celebrated in memory of Lord Parashuram and old Diwali in Nirmand. Dungri fair is held in memory of Goddess Hidimba.
2. Temple – Hidimba Devi Temple is located in Manali which was built by Raja Bahadur Singh of Kullu in 1553 AD. It is manufactured in Pagoda style. The total goddess of the Kullu dynasty is believed to be Bhagwati Hidimba.
Parshuram Temple is located in Nirmand. Nirmand is called the small Kashi of Kullu.
The temple of Mahishasuramardini and Vishweshwar Mahadev is situated in Bajaura.

1. Manali – Manali got its name from Manu (Manu-Alaya), that is, Manu’s house. Manu started the creation of the world from here. Bhima married Hidimba here. The Dungri fair which is dedicated to Hidimba Devi is celebrated here. 12 km from Manali. International skiing competitions and national winter sports are organized in Solang Nala at a distance. There is a temple of Hidimba Devi in Manali, which was built by Raja Bahadur Singh in 1553 AD. In Manali, the Shringa sage performed a yajna to obtain a son from King Dasharatha. Arjuna cave is located in Bhanara village of Manali Kullu Marg. It has the idol of Lord Krishna. Arjuna did penance here to attain Brahma-astra. Institute of Mountaineering was opened in Manali in 1961 AD.
2. Manikarna- There are glasses of hot water here. Here, the ear gem of Goddess Parvati was broken and fell.
3. Naggar – There is a museum of Roerich art here. Roerich was from Russia. In 1942, Indira Gandhi and Pandit Nehru came here. It was formerly the capital of the princely state of Kullu. Devika was the wife of Queen Nicholas Roerich.
4. Bhuntar – Bhuntar has an airport. The Harla River joins the Beas River at Bhuntar.
5. Malana – Malana village is the oldest democracy in the world, ruled by Jamlu Deity. Jamadagni, the father of Jamalu Deity Parshuram, is called Rishi.
6. Tirathan – The Great Himalayan National Park is in Tirathan.

1. Pratap Singh -1857 AD Leader of rebellion who was hanged in Dharamshala.
2. Nicholas Roerich – Russian artist who lived in Kullu’s Naggar till 1947 (lifetime). The Roerich Art Museum is named after him in Naggar.
3. Lalchand Prayati – The first person to become a minister from Kullu, Lal Chand Praythi participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942 AD and wrote the story book of Kullut country.

The population of Kullu district increased from 1,92,371 in the year 1971 to 4,37,474 in 2011 AD. The sex ratio of Kullu district is 950 in 2011. The mass density of Kullu district increased to 79 in 2011. Kullu district contributed 6.38% of the population of Himachal Pradesh in 2011. There are a total of 172 villages in Kullu district, out of which all 172 villages are Abad villages. Kullu district is the only district where there are no non-populated villages.
