Himachal Pradesh, often called the “Land of Gods,” is home to breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and majestic Himalayan peaks. These peaks are adorned with glaciers, locally known as “Himnads,” which add ethereal beauty to the region and play a vital role in the state’s ecology and rivers.

What is a Glacier?

A glacier is a large, perennial mass of ice, snow, rock, and sediment that flows slowly under its own weight. Glaciers form where:

• Mean annual temperatures are near freezing.
• Winter snowfall accumulates significantly.
• Snow does not completely melt during warmer months.

Glacial Presence in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh hosts 2,554 documented glaciers, covering 4,160.5 sq km and holding 387.3 cubic km of ice. The largest number of glaciers are found in the Satluj basin (945), followed by the Chenab basin (681), with the latter having larger glaciers on average.

Famous Glaciers of Himachal Pradesh

• Bara Shigri Glacier Bada Shigadi is located in Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh. Bada Shigadi is one of the largest glaciers in Himachal Pradesh. The length of this glacier is about 25 kilometers, while the width of this glacier is about 3 kilometers. Chandra river receives water from this glacier. This glacier is one of the largest glaciers in Asia.
• Miyar Glacier Mier Glacier is located in Lahaul. Miyar river receives water from this glacier. The length of the Miyar glacier is about 12 kilometers.
• Dudhon Glacier Dudhon Glacier is located in the Kullu Valley. Its length is about 15 kilometers. Parvati river receives water from Dudhon and Parvati glacier.
• Lady of Keylong This glacier is also visible from Keylong town. This glacier is situated at an altitude of 6061 meters. The glacier was named after an English woman.
• Chandranahan Glacier Chandranahan Glacier is located in Shimla district. The Pabbar River gets water from this glacier. Near this glacier is the ‘Chandrahan Lake’.
• Bhadal Glacier The Bhadal Glacier is located in the Barabhangal region of Kangra district. The Bhadal River receives water from the Bhadal Glacier. The Bhadal River is a major tributary of the Ravi.
• Chandra Glacier Chandra Glacier is located in Lahaul-Spiti. Chandratal Lake is formed from this glacier. The Chandra and Bhaga rivers receive water from this glacier.
• Bhaga Glacier Bhaga Glacier is located in Lahaul-Spiti district. The Bhaga River receives water from this glacier.
• Mukila Glacier This glacier is located in the Bhaga Valley of Lahaul-Spiti. This glacier is situated at an altitude of 6478 meters.
• Beas Kund Glacier Vyas Kund Glacier is located in Kullu district. This glacier is located near Rohtang Pass. Vyas river receives water from this glacier.
