 National Food Security Mission (NFSM)

 

Launched: October, 2007

 Objectives 

  •  The major objective of this scheme is to increase production and productivity of wheat, rice and pulses on a sustainable basis so as to ensure food security of the country. The approach is to bridge the yield gap in respect of these crops through dissemination of improved technologies and farm management practices. 
  • To restore soil fertility and productivity at the individual farm level. 
  • This scheme is also enhancing farm level economy. 

Salient Features of NFSM 

  • It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, which was launched in 2007. 
  • The approach of the scheme is to bridge the yield gap in respect of these crops through dissemination of improved technologies and farm management practices while focusing on districts, which have high potential but relatively low level of productivity at present. 
  • Major Components – National Food Security Mission – Rice, National Food Security Mission – Wheat, National Food Security Mission – Pulses, National Food Security Mission – Coarse Cereals and National Food Security Mission – Commercial Crops. 
  • The eligible persons will be entitled to receive 5 Kgs of foodgrains per person per month at subsidised prices of Rs. 3/2/1 per Kg for rice/wheat/coarse grains
