What is National Park
A national park is an area that is strictly reserved for the betterment of wildlife and biodiversity, and where activities such as development, forestry, poaching, farming, and grazing of pets are not allowed.
In these parks, private ownership rights are also not permitted. Their boundaries are well marked and operational. National parks usually span an area of 100 sq km to 500 sq km. In national parks, conservation of single floral or faunal species has been emphasized.
National Parks in Himachal Pradesh –
Himachal Pradesh has rich flora and fauna, and Himachal has many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. These wildlife sanctuaries, conservation sanctuaries and national parks offer the visitor a very good opportunity to enjoy and experience the state forest.
Himachal Pradesh mainly has 5 national parks-
1. 1.Great Himalayan National Park
2. Pin Valley National Park
3. Inderkilla National Park
4. Khirganga National Park
5. Simbalbara National Park
1. Great Himalayan National Park
The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP), one of the national parks of India, is located in the Kullu region in the state of Himachal Pradesh . The National Park was established in 1984 and is spread over an area of 1,171 KM 2 at an altitude of 1500 to 6000 meters . GHNP was formally declared a national park in 1999 . It received the tag of World Heritage Site on 23 June 2014 .
The Great Himalayan National Park is home to many flora and species of over 375 fauna, including about 31 mammals, 181 birds, 3 reptiles, 9 amphibians, 11 anelids, 17 molluscs and 127 insects.
§ In 2010, both Sainj and Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary were added to the GHNP.
§ The GHNP is home to many rare and threatened species, including the western trogopan, rip pheasants, the Asiatic black bear, the Himalayan Musk deer Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Cirro and Himalayan Tahar.
§ GHNP borders recently established (2010) Khirganga National Park (710 km ), Pin Valley National Park (675 km ) in the Trans-Himalayas, Rupi-Bhabha Wildlife Sanctuary (503 km किमी) in the Sutlej Strait, Kanwar Wildlife Sanctuary (61 sq km).
2. Pin Valley National Park:
Pin Valley National Park is located in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh . It was established on 9 January 1987 . The total area of Pin Valley National Park is 1825 km किमी (675 km किमी as the core zone and 1150 km किमी as the buffer zone).
The park is also known as the home of Snow Leopards: also known as gray ghost of Himalayas and is also the natural habitat of many other endangered animals such as Siberian ibex, bharal, weasel, red fox and marten. Many rare birds such as Pika, Himalayan Snowcock, Vulture, Chakor Partridge, Snow Partridge, Golden Eagle, Griffon, Himalayan Chow, Snowfinch and Raven can also be seen here.
3. Inderkilla National Park
Inderkilla National Park was established in 2010. It is spread over an area of 104 square kilometers (40 sq mi). The national park is located in Kullu district and 46 km from Kullu Manali Airport. Indarakilla National Park preserves a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Inderkilla National Park was built mainly for the protection of tigers.
4. Khirganga National Park:
Khir Ganga is a small village situated at an altitude of 3050 meters in the Parvati valley, established in the year 2010 in Kullu district after the name of this village , Khirganga National Park which is 56 km from Bhuntar, 22 km from Manikaran. The national park is spread over an area of about 710 square kilometers (270 sq mi).
Sharing its border to the north with the Great Himalayan National Park, Khirganga National Park was initially merged with the National Park, but due to some maintenance issues, the park was kept separate from the Great National Himalayan Park .
Wild bears are very common in this area . The best time to visit Khirganga National Park is between May and November when the weather is pleasant and favorable. Khirganga remains snow-covered during winters and only temporary settlements are available during summers.
5. Simbalbara National Park:
Established in 1958, Simbalbara National Park is located in Paonta Valley of Sirmaur district , making it one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Established in 1974 as the Simbalabara Wildlife Sanctuary, the park covers an area of 19.03 sq km. However, in 2010, this additional 8.88 square kilometer area was merged into its national park and converted into a national park . At present, the Simbalabara National Park is now spread over an area of 27.88 square kilometers .
The park is famous for its unique and diverse wildlife and bird species. The park has a superior biodiversity as the entire ecosystem of the region is well connected with a food chain and the parasitic environment maintains balance in biodiversity.
