- देश की पहली शिक्षिका और महिला अधिकारों की हिमायती सावित्री बाई फुले का जन्म सन् 1831 ई. में महाराष्ट्र के सतारा जिले में स्थित नायगांव नामक छोटे से गांव में हुआ था।
- सावित्री बाई फुले ने अपने पति दलित चिंतक व समाज सुधारक ज्योतिबा राव फुले से पढ़कर सामाजिक चेतना फैलाई।
- जिस समय सावित्री बाई फुले ने शिक्षा की ज्योति जलाई उस समय लड़कियों को शिक्षा से वंचित रखा जाता था।
- इसके बावजूद भी उन्होंने नारी शिक्षा के बीड़े को अंजाम तक पहुंचाया और इसके बाद ही समाज से कुंठित वर्ग की नारियां भी शिक्षा ग्रहण करने के लिए आगे आने लगीं।
- उन्होंने अपने पति ज्योतिबा राव फुले के साथ मिलकर लड़कियों के लिए 18 स्कूल खोले।
- 1848 में उन्होंने महाराष्ट्र के पुणे में देश के सबसे पहले बालिका स्कूल की स्थापना की थी।
