JOA (Library) Exam Syllabus 2026 – Subject-wise Details
1. Library Science / Library & Information Science (One Year Diploma Level)
- Library and Society: Introduction to libraries, historical development of libraries in India, types of libraries (public, academic, special, digital, virtual), National Library of India, Dr. S.R. Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science, library legislation, library associations and networks (DELNET, INFLIBNET, CALIBNET, etc.).
- Library Classification Theory and Practice (CC & DDC): Introduction, meaning, objectives, need of classification, colon classification, Dewey Decimal Classification, Universal Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Classification, types of classification schemes.
- Colon Classification Scheme: Origin and development, categories, main classes, canons, fundamental categories, facet analysis, notations, mnemonics, common isolates, rounds and levels.
- Dewey Decimal Classification: History, salient features, editions, format, notations, main classes, add devices and mnemonics.
- Cataloguing Theory and Practice (CCC & AACR-2): Concept of catalogue, objectives, forms of catalogue, alphabetical and classified catalogue, author, title and subject catalogue.
- Kinds of Entries and Subject Headings: CCC & AACR-2 entries, punctuation symbols, unit card system, Sears List and Library of Congress Subject Headings, OPAC & Web OPAC.
- Information Sources and Services: Primary, secondary and tertiary sources, print and electronic sources, reference services, document delivery, SDI, ILL, circulation service, bibliographic service, reprographic services.
- Library Administration and Management: Acquisition, circulation systems, stack maintenance, preservation and conservation, library rules, records and statistics.
- Library Management: POSDCORB, personnel management, budgeting, financial management and sources of income.
2. Computer Applications and IT in Libraries
- Fundamentals of Computers and Library Automation.
- Library Management Software (ILMS): Koha, SOUL, e-Granthalaya.
- OPAC and Web OPAC.
- Library Networking: LAN, WAN, MAN.
- Digital Library and Digitization.
- Recent trends in library automation.
3. General Awareness
