In English:
The Gupta Period is regarded as the Golden Age of Indian history, marked by great progress in art, literature, religion, and culture. Himachal Pradesh’s hilly regions were also influenced by this era.

Chandragupta I, grandson of Shri Gupta, founded the Gupta Empire in 319 AD. His son Samudragupta, often called the Napoleon of India, conquered several hill states around 340 AD.
According to Harishena’s Allahabad (Prayag) Inscription, Samudragupta defeated the kingdoms of Bhadra, Trigarta, Audumbara, Kulluta, and Kartikapura. These rulers accepted his suzerainty and paid tribute like feudal lords.
The Kulinda region was not mentioned — possibly because it had already come under Gupta control during Chandragupta I’s reign.

Samudragupta allowed the hill states internal autonomy, enabling them to maintain local power and defense. Later, Skandagupta, son of Kumaragupta, defeated the Huns and preserved the empire’s prestige. However, after his reign, the empire began to decline — mainly due to Huna invasions.

The great poet Kalidasa composed Kumarasambhava and Meghaduta during this period, both of which gloriously describe the Himalayas.
During the Gupta era, Hinduism spread widely in the hill regions, leading to the construction of many temples.
